Broadway Songbook® – Kander & Ebb and All That Jazz
Explore the songbook of John Kander and Fred Ebb, the team responsible for a myriad of Broadway hits including Cabaret, Chicago, Funny Lady and more. Many major recording artists including Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Barbara Streisand, Vanessa Williams, and the stars of Glee have recorded Kander & Ebb’s songs. During their 40-year partnership, the duo won Tonys, Emmys, Grammys and Academy Awards, and in 1998 were recognized as national treasures by the Kennedy Center honors. Their provocative and brassy style explodes with the “razzle-dazzle” of Broadway. You won’t want to miss it.
The Broadway Songbook® series explores the history, meaning, and impact of Broadway on popular American culture. The shows are hosted by Broadway veteran, James A. Rocco, written by Jeffrey P. Scott and James A. Rocco, with musical direction by two-time Ivey Award-winner Raymond Berg. The series showcases the songs and shows that have become “standards” of the American Songbook as well as undiscovered musical gems that are lesser known but important and spectacular works, saluting the legacy of musical theater in a way that is accessible, educational and entertaining.
The Broadway Songbooks look at distinct periods of time and specific major influences on musical theater, including the early years (1890 – 1920), the developing years (1920 – 1940), the “golden age” (1950s and 1960s), and the intersection of Broadway and Rock and Roll (1960s – present). Previous songbooks have also explored the life and works of Broadway legends such as Rogers & Hammerstein & Hart, Stephen Sondheim, and Comden & Green. We’ve also traveled back to the ’70s and explored the influence of Rock & Roll.
