Celebrating Community: Sharing Cultures, Building Friendships
The 2010 ARTcontest theme honors the 10th Anniversary of the Flint Hills International Children’s Festival. This theme is open to the artist’s interpretation; however, here are a few themes to help stir the creative spirit!

  • A community can be any group of people that are a part of your life: your school community, a church community, your friends, neighbors, a sports team, an online social network, etc.  How can you represent your community visually?
  • What is your culture? What kinds of traditions does your family or community participate in?
  • Friendship is a relationship colored by affection, trust, respect, discovery, and understanding.  What do we do with our friends? We feel close to our friends … we find something in common with them – even if we are very different.
  • Friendships can be between individuals your own age, family members, community members, but you can also be friends with animals, objects, the earth, and your imagination’s creations.

Fourteen young artists, each representing a grade level from Pre-K through 12, were selected to be featured on the 2009 Festival Poster.  These artists were honored with a reception and poster unveiling on Friday, May 15 in Travelers’ Jackson Room.  The event was sponsored by Ordway Circle of Stars and Travelers, and brought the family, friends, and teachers of the young artists together to celebrate the creativity of these young people.

The original artwork of the winning artists was on exhibit inside Ordway throughout the Festival.  All other entries in the ARTcontest were exhibited thoughout downtown Saint Paul until June 1 as part of the ARTwalk, a program of the Flint Hills International Children’s Festival.
