UPCOMING PERFORMANCES AND EVENTS

Tuesday April 17
7:30PM

Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS), Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, and the Minnesota Museum of American Art (MMAA) will give more than 300 students the chance of a lifetime by showcasing the skills of the best of the best high school vocalists, instrumentalists and visual artists in the SPPS district.

This is the 16th consecutive year of this event at Ordway Center and MMAA. The Honors Concert includes high school students in band, orchestra, and choir from Saint Paul Public School sites, who have been selected to perform through an adjudication process. They will take the stage at Ordway Center under the direction of guest conductors.  A World Party, featuring small instrumental and vocal student ensembles from Saint Paul elementary and junior high schools, takes place in Ordway Center's Marzitelli Foyer preceding the performance. There is also a student art exhibit presented in collaboration with the MMAA. The artwork is on exhibit at the MMMA until May 2.

WAI is an explosive group of musicians, singers, and dancers from New Zealand. We are so happy to welcome these 2004 Festival artists back the Ordway stage. This group of 5 will perform entirely in their indigenous language of Maori. WAI creates a one of a kind sound through various vocal rhythms, body-slapping, breathing techniques, and many different instruments native to New Zealand. WAI (the Maori word for water) are world renowned performers receiving two nominations from the BBC World Music Awards in 2002.

World Party will include contributions from local youth performer all focused on blending the traditional and contemporary. Thanks to CAC member Larry Yazzie (Native Pride Dancer) Rita Mustaphi (Kathka Dance Theatre) and Edna Stevens Talbot. Also enjoy art-making activities such as Maori inspired kites, buttons, and learn about the art poi with a demonstration by company member Mina Ripia. A large Maori inspired bird kite created by dance residency participants will be on exhibit as well!

ARTwalk - All entries due April 23!

There is not much time left to turn in art work for this year's ARTwalk!  We have had a great response thus far but are still accepting entries. As part of the Flint Hills International Children's Festival, the ARTwalk curates an exhibit of children's artwork in downtown Saint Paul businesses and storefront windows. The exhibit is a rare opportunity for schools and community organizations to highlight the achievements of their young people's visual creativity in a public art exhibition. The 4th Annual ARTwalk will be on display May 4 through June 3, 2007. Contact engage@ordway.org for more information about how to get involved!
