With spellbinding theatricality, Lily Cai and her beautiful company blend modern dance idioms with Asian performance traditions and Chinese classical dance. Cai, a native of Shanghai and former principal with the Shanghai Opera House Dance Company, melds her cultural lineage with American aesthetics in a living mosaic of jewel-toned ribbons and fans, ornate costumes, candlelight, and music ranging form Chinese opera to Gamelan to Mahler’s Fifth Symphony.

ON-SALE EVENT SOLD MORE THAN 25,000 TICKETS
The 2007 EDUCATION ON-SALE Event took place August 31, 2007 with the first teacher arriving at 3:38 am! Educators eagerly lined up outside Ordway Center waiting for the doors to open. At the end of the ON-SALE Event more than 25,000 tickets had been sold, making it one of our most successful events! Tickets are still available for select shows. Give your students the opportunity to experience live presentations of world-class performing artists from around the globe.
Make an online request for an Education at Ordway Center brochure which includes an order form for our Performing Arts Classroom series and the 2008 Flint Hills International Children’s Festival school performances and workshops, along with other Education at Ordway Center opportunities.

Tickets are still available for select performances of Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company and ¡Sofrito! David Gonzalez with Bobby Sarabria’s Cuarteto Aché. Both shows are not to be missed this October. In February Garth Fagan Dance and VocalEssence WITNESS still have tickets available! Additionally, have tickets for the 2008 Flint Hills International Children’s.

Your students will be captivated and amazed by Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company as they are guided through the culture and history of China. Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company is a visually captivating performance that will blend Western ballet, modern dance, and traditional Chinese dance. Join narrator Lily Cai as she takes students on a guided tour through the elegance and mystery of six different forms of dance from different regions of China. Get ready for audience participation as Lily Cai teaches the audience greetings such as “hello” and “goodbye” in Chinese as well as traditional bows and walks.

TARGET® FIELD TRIP GRANTS: FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS
If your school is looking for a way to help defray ticket and bus costs, Target Education Field Trip Grants may be your answer.
Target Field Trip Grants are available to educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals or classified staff, who are employed by an accredited K-12 public, private or charter school in the United States that maintain a 501(c)(3) or a 509(a)(1) tax exempt status. Staff must be willing to plan and execute a field trip that will provide a demonstrable learning experience for students. These grants are to be used to cover costs of field trips including tickets, buses, materials, etc. Grants must be used for the proposed field trip between February 2008 and the end of the 2007-2008 school year.

FESTIVAL BUILDING ART WINS STATE FAIR BLUE RIBBON
Students from Crossroads Elementary School were awarded a blue ribbon at the 2007 State Fair for their Festival building art. Crossroads Elementary School’s building art, with its surface covering more than 1080 ft², adorned the Saint Paul Hotel during the 2007 Flint Hills International Children’s Festival. The piece was designed by Ordway Center’s Creative Director Jeanne Kosfeld, who compiled and arranged the students’ drawings. The colorful piece will return to the Flint Hills International Festival for years to come.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT WELCOMES NEW FALL INTERNS
Kirstin Wiegmann, Festival Assistant, is a graduate of the University of Kansas with a bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics. She spent the last few years teaching at a community arts center in Lawrence, Kansas and also painting murals with young adults. Kirstin is new to Minneapolis and is currently seeking a master’s degree in Arts and Cultural Administration at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota.
Diana White, Community Engagement Intern, is currently in her senior year at the University of St. Thomas and will graduate with a degree in Communications and Legal Studies. She has had a passion for dancing her entire life and also has sung in many choirs. She is very excited to be working at Ordway Center.
Laura Kuhn, Education Intern, is a senior at University of Wisconsin- Stout studying Service Management, Human Development/ Family Studies, and Art. She will graduate in May 2008. She loves research, working with people, and organizing things with creativity. |
